How do I become a salesperson or property manager?

To be employed to sell real estate or act as a property manager in Queensland, you must be registered with the Office of Fair Trading.

To be eligible for this registration, you must be at least 18 years of age and be working for a licensed real estate agent. It is unlawful under the Property Agents and Motor Dealers Act to work for a real estate agency as a salesperson or property manager and not be registered.

To become registered, you will need to complete a course recognised by the Office of Fair Trading. The REIQ Registration course and CareerStart course are two programs recognised by the Office of Fair Trading. They both contain the compulsory four competencies required for registration:

  • PRDRE13A Obtain Property Listings
  • PRDRE15A Undertake Property Sale by Private Treaty
  • PRDRE18A Lease Property
  • PRDRE39A Prepare and Execute Documentation.

The REIQ Registration course is a five-day program encompassing all of the above competencies and is available in two streams – Sales or Property Management. Successful completion of this program will entitle you to apply for your Registration Certificate. More information is contained in the full course outline for this program.

CareerStart is a nine-day, eight-competency program that includes the four core competencies required for registration, along with four additional competencies focused on listing and marketing skills. This program is ideal for new entrants to the industry and provides students with detailed and thorough information on the functions and responsibilities of salespeople and property managers. More information is contained in the full course outline for this program.

How do I get a traineeship in sales or property management?

If you don't have experience in real estate, but wish to pursue a career in sales or property management, you may like to consider undertaking a sales or property management traineeship.

Many agencies use this scheme to employ people new to the industry as it provides them with financial incentives as well as a structured and tailored training plan for their new recruits. Information on traineeships is available from the REIQ Professional Services Division or your local REIQ training facility.

How do I become a trainee auctioneer?

To become an auctioneer, you will first need to be registered as a trainee auctioneer with the Office of Fair Trading.

However, this can only occur after you have successfully completed two competencies from the Property Development and Management Training Package PRD01. These are:

  • PRDRE14A (Market Property)
  • PRDRE39A (Prepare and Execute Documentation).

If you have completed the Sales Registration course you will have already completed PRDRE39A. Once you have the statement of attainment for the above modules, you will need to complete an application with the Office of Fair Trading. More information is contained in the full course outline for this program.

How do I become a Property Developer's Salesperson?

Under the Property Agents and Motor Dealers Act 2000, any developer who sells more than six residential properties in a 12 month period must hold a Property Developer’s Licence.

Any salesperson employed by a licenced property developer must be registered as a Property Developer Salesperson with the Office of Fair Trading. To apply for registration, applicants must complete the following four units of competency:

  • PRDRE13A Obtain Property Listings
  • PRDRE15A Undertake Property Sale by Private Treaty
  • PRDRE18A Lease Property
  • PRDRE39A Prepare and Execute Documentation

These modules are the same as those required to be a real estate salesperson. This is a five-day course and may also be completed by Distance Education. More information is contained in the full course outline for this program.
