How do I become a salesperson or property manager?

To be employed to sell real estate or act as a property manager in Queensland, you must be registered with the Office of Fair Trading.

To be eligible for this registration, you must be at least 18 years of age and be working for a licensed real estate agent. It is unlawful under the Property Agents and Motor Dealers Act to work for a real estate agency as a salesperson or property manager and not be registered.

To become registered, you will need to complete a course recognised by the Office of Fair Trading. The REIQ Registration course contains the compulsory seven competencies required for registration:

  • CPPDSM4080A Work in the real estate sector
  • CPPDSM4009A Interpret legislation to complete the work
  • CPPDSM4012A List property for sale
  • CPPDSM4008A Identify legal and ethical requirements of property sales
  • CPPDSM4010A Lease property
  • CPPDSM4022A Sell and finalise the sale of property by private treaty
  • CPPDSM4015A Minimise agency and consumer risk

The REIQ Registration course is a five-day program encompassing all of the above competencies. Successful completion of this program will entitle you to apply for your Registration Certificate. More information is contained in the full course outline for this program.

REIQ strongly recommends all students wishing to work in the property management field enrol in the Property Management Essentials course in addition to the Registration course. The Property Management Essentials course allows future property managers to maximise their knowlege of legislation and practice relevant to property management. Further training is also available for those students wishing to increase their skill and knowledge for a successful property management career in real estate in the Property Management Skills course. More information is contained in the full course outline for both courses.

Further training is available for those students wishing to increase their skill and knowledge for a successful sales career in real estate. Click here for further information.

Please note that if students have previously undertaken the PRDRE Registration course, this is still accepted by the Office of Fair Trading for registration purposes.

How do I get a traineeship?

If you don't have experience in real estate, but wish to pursue a career in the industry, you may like to consider undertaking a traineeship. Traineeships are available in sales, property management, licensing, business broking and commercial.

Many agencies use this scheme to employ people new to the industry as it provides them with financial incentives as well as a structured and tailored training plan for their new recruits. Information on traineeships is available from the REIQ Professional Services Division, your local REIQ training facility, visiting the Traineeships page on the REIQ website at www.reiq.com.au or by selecting one of the links below:
